Hero Kids in The Making

Hero Kids in the Making

Finally, a tool that prepares children for medical procedures in a fun way! This colorful storybook was especially created to help reduce childhood fears in their inevitable encounter with medical devices. "Hero Kids in the Making" is a children's picture book that redirects the imagination of a pediatric patient from a fearful perspective and towards a hero making tale that inspires bravery. This fun rhyming story turns medical procedures into cute, magical creatures. Instruments such as stethoscopes, syringes and imaging equipment are transformed into these magical animals, now in disguise. It’s a fantasy hero making version of what the child will really experience during a doctor's or hospital visit. When a child familiar with this fantasy tale experiences medical procedures, they instantly become a hero character of the story themselves.

Parents;
Every parent should read this book to their young children. All children will go through most of these medical procedures before they reach adolescence. This is also a good book for young siblings that have brothers or sisters going through medical procedures and treatments.

Medical Professionals;
Every Child Life Specialist (CLS) and pediatric practice should consider having this book in their toolkit. It's a different approach as a distracting implement, intended to both help gain compliance and explain instruments and procedures to pediatric patients. It was designed to do so on their level of understanding and within their childhood interests. Because of this, it could be effective as a long-term distracting tool for patients when other distraction methods currently being utilized don't work. We already know from many studies that positive outlooks produce a better health outcome during medical treatments. The fantasy hero making aspects of this book are meant to buildup such positive outlooks in children. Ultimately, if parents report positive outcomes with their child's willingness to comply and well-being due to this book, the goal of it has been achieved.

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”  ~ Arthur C. Clarke in “Profiles of the Future: An Inquiry into the Limits of the Possible”.

The Author;
Wg Williams was inspired to write this children's book while witnessing his son's reactions to multiple medical procedures over a long course of time. His son was diagnosed with Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) at 14 months old and he is now 6 years old and doing well. SDS is a rare childhood illness that is due to a genetic disorder that is inherited by both parents. SDS has no cure to date but with testing and treatments, the average life span of kids with SDS is into adulthood.
